Built in 1980, the port is midway between the Far East, Europe, and North America on shipping routes across the Suez Canal and the Bab Al Mandab Strait at either of the Red Sea. Along with crude and refined petroleum and gas products, the port also serves the needs of national industrial complexes that export their liquid and solid petrochemicals and import the equipment and machinery they need for production.
